【木の特ちょう―根元にウロがある】
樹齢400年以上という八重咲きの赤いツバキ。原爆によって、ツバキは根元近くまで燃え、黒焦げになりました。根元に大きなヤケドあとがあり、えぐれたようなウロになっていますが、翌年、ツバキは芽吹き、やがて花をつけるようになりました。今でも毎年、枝いっぱいに花をつけています。2017年４月撮影
【被爆を伝える】被爆直後、「70年間、草木も生えない」と新聞に記事が出て、当時のご住職と、16歳だった現名誉住職の國分良徳さん一家は、「もう広島で生きていけないのではないか」と四国の親戚を頼って、この地を離れることも考えていました。しかし、境内では早いうちにボダイジュの木が芽生え、畑では里芋も芽を出し、「大丈夫だ、ここで生きていける」とこの地でお寺を再建することを決めました。ボダイジュも広島市登録「被爆樹木」となっています。

This tree survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, about 1,820m from the hypocenter.
Before the War, there were a tree in Hoshoin Temple. The Atomic bombed camellia put forth new shoots in the burnt-out ruins of the temple, encouraging people to have hope for the future. Mr.Kuniwake and his father rebuilt the temple in the same place.

20 minute walk from the Hiroshima station. There is this tree in Hoshoin Temple. There is other A-bombed trees, including a Bodaiju(Tilia miqueliana).
